At-Tawbah 9:87

وَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ وَأَوْلَـٰدُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن يُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ

9:85 — And let not their wealth and their children impress you. Allah only intends to punish them through them in this world and that their souls should depart [at death] while they are disbelievers.

وَإِذَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ أَنْ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟ مَعَ رَسُولِهِ ٱسْتَـْٔذَنَكَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلطَّوْلِ مِنْهُمْ وَقَالُوا۟ ذَرْنَا نَكُن مَّعَ ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَ

9:86 — And when a surah was revealed [enjoining them] to believe in Allah and to fight with His Messenger, those of wealth among them asked your permission [to stay back] and said, "Leave us to be with them who sit [at home]."

رَضُوا۟ بِأَن يَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْخَوَالِفِ وَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ

Ahmed Ali

They prefer to be with women who (are allowed to) stay at home during war, and their hearts are sealed; so they fail to understand.

Ahmed Raza Khan

They preferred to be with the women who stay behind, and their hearts have been sealed, so they do not understand.

Arberry

They are well-pleased to be with those behind, and a seal has been set upon their hearts, so the they understand not.

Daryabadi

Pleased are they that they should be with the women sitters-at-home, and their hearts are sealed up, so they understand not.

Hilali & Khan

They are content to be with those (the women) who sit behind (at home). Their hearts are sealed up (from all kinds of goodness and right guidance), so they understand not.

Itani

They prefer to be with those who stay behind. Their hearts were sealed, so they do not understand.

Maududi

They were content to stay behind with the womenfolk. Their hearts were sealed, leaving them bereft of understanding.

Mubarakpuri

They are content to be with those who sit behind. Their hearts are sealed up, so they understand not.

Pickthall

They are content that they should be with the useless and their hearts are sealed, so that they apprehend not.

Qarai

They are pleased to be with those who stay back, and their hearts have been sealed. So they do not understand.

Qaribullah & Darwish

They were content to be with those who stayed behind, a seal was set upon their hearts, so they do not understand.

Saheeh International

They were satisfied to be with those who stay behind, and their hearts were sealed over, so they do not understand.

Sarwar

They are happy to stay home with those who are of no help in the battle, thus, their hearts were sealed and they were left with no understanding.

Shakir

They preferred to be with those who remained behind, and a seal is set on their hearts so they do not understand.

Wahiduddin Khan

They preferred to be with [the women], who remained behind [at home]: their hearts are sealed and so they do not understand.

Yusuf Ali

They prefer to be with (the women), who remain behind (at home): their hearts are sealed and so they understand not.

Transliteration

Radoo bian yakoonoo maAAa alkhawalifi watubiAAa AAala quloobihim fahum la yafqahoona

لَـٰكِنِ ٱلرَّسُولُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمُ ٱلْخَيْرَٰتُ ۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

9:88 — But the Messenger and those who believed with him fought with their wealth and their lives. Those will have [all that is] good, and it is those who are the successful.

أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ

9:89 — Allah has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. That is the great attainment.
